Ah, the Seventies, back when 0-60 in under 16 seconds was a bragging right.

When the Gremlin came out the average salary in the USA was about 7 grand. Still was really cheap.

If you adjusted for inflation in everything, average annual household income at the time would have been equivalent to $200k. No-skill jobs while in school paid the equivalent of $160k today. It’s mind boggling how our incomes have stagnated and declined in the last 40-50 years. Nobody really realizes. Somewhere around 1965-1970 our economy divided and wealth started concentrating. By the 1980s there were conspicuously rich people that TV shows obsessed about. By the 1990s they were starting to hide that as living standards declined.

This was, by the standards of the time and today an exceptionally cheap car.

I think the zenith of the American middle class was 1968. By multiple CPI/inflation measures, it has been downhill since then. Federal minimum wage that year was the equivalent of ~$11 today. An $11 minimum wage today would have the Randian morons screaming. There was a difference before people fell for the trickle down lie - the “temporarily embarrassed millionaire” line rings true.

I need to get the 4Runner out west so we can legally street race.
